The International, Elvis and a tunnel that came up early
Westgate opened in 1969 as the International Hotel, then was the Las Vegas Hilton and briefly LVH before becoming Westgate in 2014. Westgate says it was the world’s largest hotel from 1981 to 1990.
Elvis opened here on July 31, 1969 and played his residency until December 1976: 636 sold-out shows, by Westgate’s count (some sources say 837). The bronze statue was unveiled on Sept 8, 1978, with Priscilla and Vernon Presley there, and now stands in the lobby.
The Boring Company says its Prufrock machine “porpoised” out of the ground, so the tunnel ends less than 100 feet from Westgate’s front door.
